Learning on-line is a new experience for all of us; however, it is a way of learning that will increase in the future, as more institutions and organizations use the Internet for distance education. Does being a student in an on-line environment require new strategies for maximizing your learning? What hints do you have for learning online?

Be a thoughtful participant. Instead of dominating discussions or other activities, balance your own thoughts with reactions to thoughts by others.

We have to be very organized with our schedules. Otherwise we tend to get distracted

We need to keep up with the assignments and stick to the schedule otherwise we will be behind and it will be very difficult to catch up. Commitmment is the most important attitude that an online student need to have.

I agree with everything said above and I would like to add that when learning online we need to give more thought to what we are 'saying' as our virtual classroom mates and the teacher cannot see our faces, they might interpret what we have written in a different from what we actually wanted to say way.

I agree with all the comments. For me, online learning is not my learning preference, but something I want become more comfortable with. I have often found it isolating, as I like the company of people and verbal discussion, but I hope the content and topic presentation will be stimulating enough to grab my attention and help retain my enthusiasm, and I hope I can keep up with the technological instructions - i sometimes feel overwhelmed, particularly at the start with many registrations, passwords, links to various websites etc. It will also take time and commitment on my part to try new approaches and get the most out of this learning experience. I believe the online learning experience is a two-way or even three-way responsibility - me as learner; the instructor/coordinator;other students/participants.

I also agree with everything said. New strategies need to be developed in order to keep up with the tasks. Commitment, good time managment and collaboration are key elements in online learning.

A student studying online should also find ways for himself to discover more of the internet and how to enhance his online learning. Teaching is not only the teacher's responsibility but his as well.

Here are my thoughts: 1. Need some time to learn and get used to the new tools. 2. Need to spend more time than the f2f learning. 3. Be proactive. Participate and ask questions.
Happy learning!

I agree with most of the participants and I'd add "patience" from all of us as we don't have the same skills for the on-line stuff!! Smiles, Maria

I think anxiety reduction is necessary for a successful student experience. Just figuring out the online environment can be daunting. Extended times for deadlines and quick replies to emails help get students settled.
